Today, I\u2019ll discuss how digital transformation has revolutionized the automotive industry.<\/p>\n<p>By 2020, growing digitalization and advancements in technology will have increased the automotive industry investments to $82 billion. The automotive industry has learned quickly that they must meet consumer demands for a digitally enhanced experience when they are researching, purchasing and operating a car. These are the trends currently transforming the automotive industry.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Digital Sources In The Car Buying Process<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Car buying used to be a source of stress, with the pervasive salesman stereotype proving true in tense back and forth negotiations. Consumers, equipped only with a newspaper ad, felt ill-informed and pressured when buying a new vehicle. Today, consumers are researching a car online before even stepping foot in a dealership. Thanks to websites like TrueCar and Edmunds, all pertinent buying information is available in a second and at the click of a button. What\u2019s more is that actual showrooms are slowly being transformed into digital market places equipped with virtual reality capabilities. A great example of this is the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/centricdigital.com\/blog\/digital-transformation\/why-digital-transformation-should-be-a-strategic-priority-for-the-automotive-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Audi virtual showrooms in London<\/a>\u00a0where only a handful of actual cars are on display, dwarfed by the giant video screens displaying relevant buying information. Virtual reality capabilities allow consumers to open doors, sneak a 360-degree peek inside and out, and even hear authentic sound effects of their potential new model. In response to consumer-driven expectations to research and buy online, companies are likely to begin selling cars and parts directly through their respective websites.<\/p>\n<div id=\"inread\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>Autonomous Driving<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accenture.com\/t20170116T084448__w__\/us-en\/_acnmedia\/Accenture\/Conversion-Assets\/WEF\/PDF\/Accenture-Automotive-Industry.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Elon Musk<\/a>\u00a0predicts the autonomous vehicle (AV) is \u201cjust going to become normal. Like an elevator. They used to have elevator operators, and then we developed some simple circuitry to have elevators just come to the floor that you&#8217;re at, you just press the button. Nobody needs to operate the elevator. The car is just going to be like that.\u201d The possibility of cars driving themselves will become a reality thanks to the collaboration between several advanced technologies. From GPS to sensors to cameras to connectivity and algorithms, AV will ultimately handle all situations and all conditions. The expectation is that AV will decrease automotive accidents and deaths, and give those previously constrained the freedom of travel. Assisted-driving, another facet of autonomous driving, is becoming more mainstream every day. The goal is that this feature becomes more readily available in the less expensive models. It is anticipated that assisted-driving technology will be so effective in reducing accidents and lowering insurance costs that in the next 10 years, it will save consumers upwards of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.accenture.com\/t20170116T084448__w__\/us-en\/_acnmedia\/Accenture\/Conversion-Assets\/WEF\/PDF\/Accenture-Automotive-Industry.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">one trillion dollars<\/a>\u00a0and, most importantly, more than\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.accenture.com\/t20170116T084448__w__\/us-en\/_acnmedia\/Accenture\/Conversion-Assets\/WEF\/PDF\/Accenture-Automotive-Industry.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">900,00 lives<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Self-driving technology, while not as prevalent on the road, is being experimented with all over the world. Various regulations and barriers are impeding the growth because, as with anything that becomes digitized and connected to the Internet, the threat to cyber security increases exponentially.<\/p>\n<div class=\"vestpocket\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>Connected Supply Chain And Improved Manufacturing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As we\u2019ve seen in other industries, digital transformation trends are being used to personalize a consumer\u2019s experience and customize to his needs. The automotive industry is no different. By digitizing the connected supply chain, it drives costs down, more effectively engages the consumer, and collects and uses data to better serve consumers. Recently, the industry has moved away from the national and regional production and toward a more decentralized approach for both production and the supply chain. In addition to lower costs, this has allowed for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.accenture.com\/t20170116T084448__w__\/us-en\/_acnmedia\/Accenture\/Conversion-Assets\/WEF\/PDF\/Accenture-Automotive-Industry.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">more transparency<\/a>\u00a0in the supply chain, accelerating design, manufacturing, and delivery. Communication made possible by social media and the Internet of Things provides instant feedback that \u201ctalks\u201d to a smart factory. A smart factory uses advanced algorithms and AI to perform tasks like creating schedules and managing workflow, and has robots working alongside humans on assembly lines. These connected technologies increase productivity and decrease defect rates as shown in a small electronics plant in Germany. In 1990, the plant was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.accenture.com\/t20170116T084448__w__\/us-en\/_acnmedia\/Accenture\/Conversion-Assets\/WEF\/PDF\/Accenture-Automotive-Industry.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">25%<\/a>\u00a0automated, compared to today\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.accenture.com\/t20170116T084448__w__\/us-en\/_acnmedia\/Accenture\/Conversion-Assets\/WEF\/PDF\/Accenture-Automotive-Industry.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">75%<\/a>\u00a0automation. Further digitization has dropped defect rates to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.accenture.com\/t20170116T084448__w__\/us-en\/_acnmedia\/Accenture\/Conversion-Assets\/WEF\/PDF\/Accenture-Automotive-Industry.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">below 12 per million<\/a>, and output has increased\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.accenture.com\/t20170116T084448__w__\/us-en\/_acnmedia\/Accenture\/Conversion-Assets\/WEF\/PDF\/Accenture-Automotive-Industry.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">8.5 times<\/a>. Despite obvious financial barriers in constructing these smart factories, the giant improvements to production, flexibility, and performance will likely overcome this hurdle.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-body-image\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body-image\">\n<div style=\"width: 970px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs-images.forbes.com\/danielnewman\/files\/2017\/07\/Top_6_Digital_Transformation_Trends_In_Automotive-01.jpg?width=960\" alt=\"Futurum Research\" width=\"960\" height=\"1244\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Futurum Research<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body-image\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"caption-container\">\n<p><strong>Predictive Maintenance<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Do your tires need air? Does a part need replaced? There\u2019s no more guess work in car maintenance since today\u2019s vehicles let us know when they need maintenance or replacement. Using advanced self-diagnostic systems, drivers are instantly alerted any time there is a problem, allowing us to proactively service our vehicles, drastically reducing mechanical failures and recalls. A fantastic example of predictive maintenance at work is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.accenture.com\/t20170116T084448__w__\/us-en\/_acnmedia\/Accenture\/Conversion-Assets\/WEF\/PDF\/Accenture-Automotive-Industry.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michelin\u2019s tire monitoring program<\/a>. \u201cUsing telematics and predictive analysis, the service provides over-the-road tire monitoring. Data is collected digitally and fed into the fleet\u2019s asset monitoring system, giving companies real-time performance analysis and wear data of specific tires on individual trucks.\u201d Now we know there\u2019s a problem even before there\u2019s a problem! The data maintains a connection between OEMs and customers, even as owners of one vehicle change. As far as service of a vehicle goes, that, too, has become digitized which requires not just mechanical attention and repair, but a tech-savvy technician to maintain and update software. The dynamic duo of mechanics and technology means optimal vehicular performance for longer periods of time. Remote service becomes a possibility, whereas now, owners take their cars to garages or shops. With the continued integration of technology, gauges and knobs will be replaced with a digital interface that allows for over-the-air updates, meaning owners don\u2019t have to leave their driveways for routine car maintenance.<\/p>\n<p>This predictive capability isn\u2019t just limited to cars and personal vehicles either. The trucking industry is already seeing a similar movement powered by sensor technologies and IoT that allows companies to monitor data proactively to ensure truck safety, fuel optimization and even monitoring of cargo. SAS, one of the leaders in this type of analytics solution has already deployed this type of solution and seen strong results that included\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sas.com\/content\/datamanagement\/2017\/01\/17\/trucking-to-a-streaming-future\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">improvements of more than 30%<\/a>\u00a0in truck uptime and the prediction of failures 30 days out at an accuracy rate of 90%<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mobility-As-A-Service (MaaS)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With the continued emergence and dominance of private and public ride sharing, we find vehicles have become an element of connected living. Disrupting the current landscape of the automotive industry are independent are startups like Uber and Lyft, which lend to the shift away from privately owned cars and toward the service-oriented forms of transit. Presenting consumers with financial relief by eliminating expenses like the huge upfront cost of purchasing a vehicle, down to the maintenance and licensing and registration, mobility-as-a-service (MaaS) translates into big savings for the customer. Rather than swim against the current, the auto industry has opted in. Partnerships with and investments in these companies is just the beginning for the industry;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/centricdigital.com\/blog\/digital-trends\/factors-influencing-digital-transformation-in-the-automotive-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Volkswagen<\/a>\u00a0is forging the way with its own ride-sharing app, while\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/centricdigital.com\/blog\/digital-trends\/factors-influencing-digital-transformation-in-the-automotive-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fiat<\/a>\u00a0is in talks with Google.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Data Security And Protection<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Second, only to utilities, the automotive industry is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.accenture.com\/t20170116T084448__w__\/us-en\/_acnmedia\/Accenture\/Conversion-Assets\/WEF\/PDF\/Accenture-Automotive-Industry.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the most data-driven<\/a>\u00a0industry in the world. Intelligent vehicles collect data about drivers, destinations, routes, traffic patterns, etc. The consumer benefits in that he will be at the center of these efforts, as companies continue working to establish and maintain levels of customer loyalty.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/centricdigital.com\/blog\/digital-transformation\/why-digital-transformation-should-be-a-strategic-priority-for-the-automotive-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jaguar Land Rover<\/a>\u00a0has rolled out a smart car that uses data to learn driver preference and behavior. Connected software systems use data to communicate with and engage drivers; however, they must be secure in order to protect consumer data. An example of such plagued technology like the OnStar RemoteLink iOS app. For as convenient and beneficial as the app is, it\u2019s also the potential playground for hackers.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/centricdigital.com\/blog\/digital-transformation\/why-digital-transformation-should-be-a-strategic-priority-for-the-automotive-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">General Motors<\/a>\u00a0was under cyberattack when hackers forcibly took control over several vehicle functions. Manufacturers understand the utmost importance of data security and protection which is why they are in constant search of forward-thinking advancements as the automotive industry continues its digital revolution.<\/p>\n<p>These kinds of widespread changes inherently pose challenges to any industry.
